Bob’s Garden Update

I just thought I would give you an update on my garden.

Currently we are nearing the end of Central Florida's Spring garden season. Cold weather crops such as lettuce cannot handle Florida's hot, humid summers. On the other hand, peppers seem to love hot, humid weather. Only a few varieties of tomatoes which are heat tolerant will set fruit during Florida summers. The trick is figuring out which tomatoes will produce fruit during the summers here. Many cherry tomatoes will continue to set fruit during the summer months. The University of Florida has developed several varieties of tomatoes that are heat tolerant. And there are some heirloom / open pollinated that are heat tolerant as well.

I still have a few slicing tomatoes on the vine that are about to turn ripe. But most of my larger tomato plants which were put outside in February are finished. I will be replacing them with some heat tolerant plants. I am still getting cherry tomatoes, but I will need to replace those plants soon.

I have a couple of varieties of dwarf tomato plants which produce cherry tomatoes. They are doing well. But my Tiny Tim Tom tomatoes have outgrown their hydroponic system. Next time I might try growing micro dwarf tomatoes in it as they only get 8 inches tall.

While it is too hot to grow lettuce outside, I can still grow lettuce inside in my "grow closet" under grow lights. That method works well for a number of plants.

My peppers love the hot, humid weather and they are doing well. I have several varieties of hot peppers and sweet peppers.

My basil, chives, dill, rosemary, mint, and bunching onions are all doing well. I have so much basil that I am making lots of pesto, freezing it, drying it, and giving it away.

So, that's what is happening in my garden these days.

Blessings,

Bob

No Reserve

"There is no reserve in God's love; he has given the best in heaven for the worst on earth, and in this way has rebuked distrust and established confidence.  If we only want what God gives us we shall be perfectly happy.  Nothing is of real value to us that we cannot take from our Father's hand and thank him for."  — Selected
